How & Where to Put Wasp Decoys
For our decoys to work their magic, they need to be visible to scouting wasps. Since paper wasps look for safe, sheltered spots, your decoy should be placed exactly where a real queen would want to build her home.
1. Optimal Placement Locations
- Under Eaves and Overhangs: This is a primary choice for wasps. Mounting your decoy under rooflines, soffits, or porch ceilings mimics their natural nesting habits.
- Decks and Patios: Hang decoys in the corners of your deck or under patio umbrellas to protect your outdoor living space.
- Playgrounds and Swing Sets: Protect your family by hanging a decoy near play equipment where wasps often hide.
- Trees and Garden Sheds: If you have dense tree canopies or outbuildings, these are prime areas for wasps. A decoy here will push them away from your yard entirely.
- Near Water or Trash: Place decoys near pools, ponds, or garbage cans, as wasps are naturally drawn to these areas for food and hydration.
- On or near trailer hitches or locks: Place decoys to prevent wasps from finding a hidden home where you least expect it.
2. Installation Tips for Maximum Success
- Early Spring is Key: The decoy is a deterrent, not a removal tool. It must be up before the queen chooses a spot (typically March to May)
- High Visibility: Ensure the decoy isn't hidden behind bushes or pillars. It needs a clear line of sight for at least 30–50 feet so scouts see it before they get close.
- Keep it Steady: Mount the decoy so it doesn't swing excessively in the wind, as real nests are generally stable.
- Clear Old Nests First: A decoy will not drive away an established colony. Before hanging, safely remove any existing or old nests from previous years.
Why do these work?
When it comes to decoy wasp nests, it’s important to know the nest won’t repel wasps. Instead, the theory is the fake nest will encourage wasps to find a different area to live. Why? Social wasps are territorial and don’t want to interact with other colonies. They tend to stay about 200 feet from an existing nest.
